I was expecting some high-tech closed-cell foam substrate, but it was just regular old crumbly styrofoam with a plastic backing. I used a serrated bread knife to get a clean cut with the least amount of foam shredding. Each piece was squeaked into place between the sleepers, and should solidly support a plywood sheathing.
