I was aided in my Journey Of A Thousand Screws by this little fellow, called "The Dimpler". It's actually a drywall screw set, and is designed to drive screws just below the surface and no further. For the subfloor project, this helped to set the screws just deep enough to pull below the plane of the floor, but not to splinter the wood surface by pulling down too far.
